Call for Papers Religions and Secularities in the Caucasus: New Configuration Conference, Tbilisi, June 1-2, 2015
\nThis international conference will be dedicated to the reconfiguration of the religious and the secular in both North and South Caucasus, more than two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, new forms of religiosity and religious instrumentalisation in politics have emerged and, on the other hand, there has been a reshaping of the discourses and practices of secularity. In the Caucasus, just as in other parts of the world, the \u201creligious\u201d and the \u201csecular\u201d are now perceived as two opposed ideological paradigms, while in practice, the boundaries between them are blurred and shifting, both in the public and the private spheres.
\nThe role of the State has been central in all these processes — we mean here independent states, as well as the autonomous republics of Russia, and the de-facto break-away states. These States have been using religion as a source of legitimation, thus promoting de-secularisation; while attempting to redefine and institutionalise secularity, they are seeking ways of managing religious diversity. Their role has therefore been ambiguous, and this may be tied to tensions between political elites. Yet this ambiguity also reflects larger social developments \u201cfrom below\u201d, i.e. triggered by various grassroots actors and social groups who serve as agents either of a revitalised religiosity or secularity, or of a more complex combination of religious sensitivity with secular habitus.
\nThe conference will look at changes in the religious landscape in the Caucasus from the angle of the common Russian\/Soviet legacy. Indeed, the latter has largely defined the forms of both religion and secularity as they were shaped in the last decades. Nevertheless, in spite of this common legacy, these developments differ greatly from one part of the region to another. The conference will also explore the relationship between the local processes and the larger regional or even global trends, in view of the growing interconnectedness of the Caucasus.<\/p>\n

Possible topics may include, among others:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Religion and secularity as resources of political legitimation and of Realpolitik;
\n\u2022 Institutional arrangements of religion and religious diversity, and their evolution;
\n\u2022 Legal pluralism accommodating religious traditions;
\n\u2022 Regulation of religious presence in the public sphere;
\n\u2022 Overlaps, partnership and conflicts between religious and public institutions (administration, education, etc.);
\n\u2022 Differences of secular\/religious divide on national and local levels;
\n\u2022 Public debates about religion and secularity;
\n\u2022 Traditional religious institutions and religious-lay initiatives;
\n\u2022 Faith-based organisations and movements as new agents in the civil society;
\n\u2022 Transnational and international influences in shaping religion and secularity;<\/p>\n

The disciplines welcomed are sociology, anthropology, political science and religious studies.
\nThe conference will be held on June 1-2, 2015, at Ilia University, Tbilisi.
